Health Care Worker (HCW) Influenza Vaccination
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone 6 months or older get vaccinated against influenza as soon as the flu vaccine is available in their community. It is especially important that health care workers get vaccinated because they may care for or live with people at high risk for influenza-related complications. People 65 years or older, young children, and people with medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease are at especially high risk from the flu and complications.
The Maryland Health Care Commission collects and reports the rates of staff influenza vaccination for different facility types. Ambulatory Surgical Facilities/Hospital Based Outpatient Departments, Assisted Living facilities with ten beds or more, Hospice agencies and Home Health agencies are surveyed by the Commission each year. Vaccination information for Hospitals and Nursing Homes is reported directly to the federal National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) via the Healthcare Personnel Safety Component survey for healthcare workers. All the surveys collect information on vaccinations received by staff working in these settings, as well as information on infection prevention initiatives. Results for each facility, as well as statewide scores, are publicly reported on the Maryland Quality Reporting website under the facility profile pages.
