In the 2018 legislative session, the Senate Finance Committee (Committee) directed the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to establish a work group. This work group was tasked with identifying shortcomings in existing policies governing school-based telehealth programs and developing strategies for policy improvement. These improvements could encompass statutory, regulatory, or technical changes. The Committee mandated that MHCC submit a report detailing the work group's findings and providing legislative and regulatory recommendations, including associated budgetary estimates for state-funded initiatives aimed at enhancing the delivery of school-based telehealth services. The Committee requested an interim presentation in January 2019, with a final report due in November 2019.
The School-Based Telehealth Work group will:
- Identify opportunities for utilizing telehealth within a school-based setting.
- Determine the challenges associated with implementing and expanding school-based telehealth programs.
- Assess the resources necessary for ensuring the sustainability and scalability of school-based telehealth services.
The work group may be organized into subgroups to address specific telehealth-related areas, including but not limited to, technology, operational logistics, and financial considerations. A detailed group charter is available here.
A final and interim report was submitted to the Senate Finance Committee.
