National Governors Association Center for Best Practices
Multi-State Privacy and Security Workgroup

The Center for Health Information Technology participates on the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices Multi-State Collaborative Workgroup (Workgroup). The focus of this Workgroup is to address the challenges related to the privacy and security of electronic health information exchange.

The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices is coordinating efforts across states to examine variations in policies, practices and state laws related to privacy and security, and to work on developing strategies to address common challenges to achieving electronic health information exchange. This is an effort to share the lessons learned from the work of states on privacy and security as it relates to sharing electronic patient information. The Workgroup will also develop a 2008 plan of work for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology on privacy and security for the following initiatives:

• Education – Message/Dissemination/Engagement;
• Adoption of Standards – Authentication/Access control/Audit;
• Privacy and Security Governance Structure;
• Consent/Authorization Issues;
• Inter-Organizational Agreements; and
• Harmonizing State Privacy Law.
