The Center for Health Information Technology conducted an assessment of privacy and security policies and business practices related to electronic health information exchange from the perspective of individual health care Sector Groups. The Sector Groups consisted of consumers, hospitals, medical laboratories and diagnostic imaging centers, long term care providers, payers, pharmacies, physicians, and purchasers. The work focused on business policies and practices in general, and security policies and practices in particular, that may hinder the development of effective local, regional, and national systems for electronic health information exchange. The recommendations developed by the Sector Groups will provide the framework for a Solutions and Implementation Workgroup to formulate solutions and develop implementation plans that address business practices and state laws affecting privacy and security in order to create an environment that promotes health information exchange in Maryland. The report was published in November 2007.
