Frequently Asked Questions
This is a list of questions that have been commonly asked about the Maryland Assisted Living Facilities.
What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living facilities provide a home and support services to meet the needs of residents who are unable to perform, or who need help in performing certain activities of daily living. Assisted Living residences may provide assistance with meal preparation, household chores, managing medications, dressing or bathing. People who live in assisted living facilities generally have less complicated medical problems than people in nursing homes and therefore do not require 24 hour care from licensed nurses. This housing option enables seniors to remain in a home-like setting in their communities and promotes their independence and dignity.
What is the Uniform Disclosure Statement?
In 2006 the Maryland legislature required implementation of a standard form describing services and policies of Assisted Living programs to inform potential consumers about the services provided by an Assisted Living facility and to assist a consumer in choosing the most appropriate assisted living program for him or her.
The Uniform Disclosure Statement is: 1) filed with the Office of Health Care Quality as part of an application for licensure; 2) amended by the program when services reported on the form change; 3) given to individuals as part of the program’s marketing materials; and, 4) given to individuals upon request. Where can I find information about paying for an assisted living facility, my rights as a resident, contract issues, and alternatives to assisted living?
Many Maryland State agencies, the University of Maryland, and advocates have developed a comprehensive Guide designed to answer the questions listed above. To access the entire Assisted Living in Maryland: What You Need to Know Guide please click here: MDOA
What is the source of the information listed in the MHCC Guide to Assisted Living Facilities and how often is it updated?
The data come from the Maryland Long-Term Care Survey (LTCS) conducted by the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC). The survey is conducted annually and the Guide is updated near the beginning of each calendar year. Certain information, such as the facility contact, may be updated more frequently by the facility itself.
